As most of you know, the Church of St
Teilo occupies the site of one of the earliest Christian settlements
in Wales.
According to the Book of Llandaff the Church dates back to 480/490
A.D. when St Teilo established a Llan (Church) hidden in a dell
above the stream. This was probably an open enclosure where people
met to worship and celebrate the Eucharist.
The beauty of the Church today is its simplicity, typical of many
Gower Churches
We have many visitors from all parts of the world who find the Church
and its history fascinating. Others just enjoy sitting in the quietness
and stillness.
Many people of Bishopston, Murton and Kittle have loved ones buried
in our grounds, which are well kept and maintained. We have tried
to landscape the grounds placing seats so that visitors and families
can rest and reflect.
The cost of maintaining our grounds and Church buildings are quite
expensive. Last year grass-cutting alone cost £1000 and essential
maintenance came to nearly £3000. To keep our doors open for
you last year, the cost was £45,000.
Today our visitors ask us how can they help or be part of our Church.
Some in the village who have families buried at St Teilo’s
offer donations for the upkeep of their graves – others ?
they leave it to the Church.
To this end we have launched “Friends of St Teilo’s”,
where people who appreciate our Church and want to feel part of
it can make annual donations to keep this beautiful Church to the
high standard it is.
